Marine Uses Craigslist To Facilitate Ex-Girlfriend’s Rape
The anonymity of the Internet is well-known, and Craiglist has been through a lot of controversy over its “erotic services” section, including a connection with the “Craigslist Killer.” Now, with Internet anonymity involved, two men are accused in a rape; one for the rape, and one for “arranging it” via Craigslist.
A Casper woman was assaulted at her front door, raped at knifepoint in her living room and left bound on the floor. However, the perpetrator, 26-year-old Ty McDowell (above), says that the thought the attack was invited, via a Craiglist ad.
The ad, placed in Craigslist’s “Casual Encounters” section, was written by a woman named “Sara” who was looking for a rape fantasy. While shocking enough to have someone answer the ad, what was more shocking was that the ad wasn’t written by “Sara,” or by a woman at all. It was written by the woman’s ex-boyfriend, a U.S. Marine named Jebidiah Stipe (above). It was Stipe, police charge, who, as the crime unfolded, was e-mailing McDowell as he planned the fantasy.
After giving McDowell an address and a picture, Stipe waited for the assault to happen. It did happen, on Dec. 11th, when Ty McDowell broke into the woman’s home in Casper, Wyoming, gagged her, tied her up and raped her.
Additionally, only a few days before the woman was attacked, she had complained to the Natrona County Sheriff’s Department over a false Craigslist posting about her, including photographs and personal information. The ad read, “Need a real aggressive man with no concern for women,” and was taken down after the complaint. It was apparently too late.
According to District Attorney Mike Blonigen, “The aspect of the internet being involved and the technological part of recovering evidence, computer sources, phone sources, multimedia sources, does create some issues for investigators. It’s not the kind of case I would have seen 10-years ago.”
Despite McDowell’s contention that he felt it was all a fantasy act, the DA plans to charge him with rape. “We anticipated that. We’ll be ready to answer that with our evidence.”
