Despite that “sinking feeling” that many stockholders and employees are getting, in terms of the long-term viability of Palm, given the latest reports from the beleaguered company, it hasn’t given up. It has just released version 1.4 of its webOS platform, which adds significant improvements to the platform.

According to Sprint, Version 1.4 adds / fixes the following:

Fixes:

• Time Zone bug fixed
• Network time sync bug fixed to reflect accurate Network time
• Bluetooth car-kit transition to device corrected
• No EV icon bug fixed (random)
• Random browser formatting bugs fixed
• Fixed bug that incorrectly displayed Sprint when actually was Digital Roaming
• Missing Contact issue specifically with swap down to 1.2.9.1 or less

Feature Updates:

• Phonebook Transfer (import & export)
• Adds Video Capture capability & edit
• Calendar Enhancements
• Messaging Enhancements
• Improved Performance (Phone & CAL)
• Email Enhancements
• Notification Enhancements

Perhaps the biggest change of note is that the update adds the necessary foundation for Adobe Flash support. That, however, will come as a separate download from the Palm App Catalog.

One other thing, Palm’s post on this update does not mention Verizon as a carrier receiving an update. It does say that “other carries will be coming soon,” however.

Amazon.com, possibly aggressively pushing as much Kindle development out the door as possible prior to the March launch of the iPad, has released a free Kindle application for BlackBerry (RIM) phones. The company already had free iPod touch / iPhone and Windows PC readers available.

In their press release, the company already noted that soon they would have applications for both Mac and iPad, as well (the company had previously announced that Kindle e-books would be readable on the iPad).

In an emailed press release, Ian Freed, Vice President, Amazon Kindle said:

“Since the launch of our popular Kindle for iPhone app last year, customers have been asking us to bring a similar experience to the BlackBerry, and we are thrilled to make it available today. Kindle for BlackBerry is a great way for customers to continue reading their current book wherever they are – in between meetings, at the grocery store or waiting in the doctor’s office. We think customers are going to love how easy and fun it is to read their Kindle books on their BlackBerry.”

The free app is available at http://www.amazon.com/kindlebb. The supported list of BlackBerrys includes the Bold 9000 and 9700, the Curve 8520 and 8900, the Storm 9530 and 9550, and the Tour 9630.

Google, which learned the hard way that web-based support may be fine for non-premium web services, but not for unlocked cell phones purchased for over $500, is now offering phone support for the Nexus One. This move comes as no surprise based on a job post reported earlier.

What’s interesting, however, when you visit Google’s Nexus One support site, is that the Google number itself is only about status or shipping.

It would be nice if Google would field tech support calls itself. For those, you still have to go to OEM HTC. If Motorola, as rumored, releases its own sort of Google Phone (for Google), is Google just going to add another tech support number for Motorola in that section? This might prove confusing for some.

I’ll put the PSA at the top of this post: if you have a jailbroken iPhone or iPod touch, don’t update to iPhone OS 3.1.3. At least, don’t do so until a new jailbreak is available.

The latest release of the iPhone OS is a minor update. Many of the changes are security-focused. Aside from those, there are more updates:

• improves accuracy of reported battery level on iPhone 3GS
• resolves issue where 3rd party apps would not launch in some instances
• fixes bug that may cause an app to crash when using the Japanese Kana keyboard

Nothing of critical significance, unless perhaps you have one of those apps which don’t launch or use Kana.  On the other hand, the number of super-cool jailbroken apps many have installed will instantly stop working if you upgrade before new tools are released.

FolderPlay (Open Source) is an audio application for Symbian OS, that gapplessly plays back a subset of the directory structure with orientation on lossless formats and supports the following audio file types: WAV, LPCM, FLAC, APE/MAC, AC3, MP3.
Intended for S60 3rd ed. FP1 or newer Symbian OS. Supports and shows WAV, LPCM (MPEG PS), FLAC, APE/MAC, AC3 (MPEG PS), MP3 (built in codec). Gaplessly plays back a chosen subset of the natural directory structure, with subfolders, ordered alphabeticaly. No playlists.

For gapless playback, the files in a play sequence must have the same sample rate and number of channels, but may be of different format. MP3 file will play gaplessly only after another MP3 one with the same parameters. AC3 playback is realtime on devices with FPU (such as N95, 5800, N97…) and uses the latest liba52. FLAC and Monkey’s audio use the latest official codecs; the latter must be of fast or normal compression level. In case the playback stops unexpectedly (as experienced with Monkey’s audio) use Pause-Resume combination. If an incompatible file is encountered in the play sequence, the playback will halt on this file on 3rd ed. FP1, due to a well-known bug on those phones (no workaround).

Pause-Resume combination should help. Red Button = send to background Green Button = pause/resume and stop (long press) On 5th. edition phones use toolbar instead. The in/out calls will get through, playback will be suspended till the end of the conversation.

Change Log :
Added playback progress monitor and random rewinding. Rewinding works with buttons (left, right), slider (on touch devices) and all formats except WAV. Fixed the bug when music resumes after a conversation being previously explicitly paused.
